Hi and welcome!
I might be wrong, but as far as I know there is no such group in or around Berlin. If I'm wrong please correct me fellow members. (There might be a handful of English Pen&Paper groups though.)
But it shouldn't be a problem to find people to speak English with. I already met some non-German-speakers on LARP-cons and I don't think they had a lot of problems in terms of communication. And playing with them was always fun. I consider my own English-skills as not so bad and am always happy for practice (my speaking and writing is a bit rusty because I seldom have the opportunity, but I read and understand it pretty well).
And if you say you don't speak German yet then maybe the best way to learn it would be just to jump in at the deep end?
Next weekend on the 22th we have the Drakenstein-LARP-tavern in Berlin Tegel. If you come I promise you there will be enough people who speak enough English for you not to get bored. I'm sure of that. If you need more information just say so, I'll translate it for you.
Now I have a few questions if you don't mind. I'm just curious.
Would you like to give us a little bit more information about yourself? Where do you come from and have you already LARP-experience?
I look forward to read more from you.
Greetings
Nadine

woah Nadine thanks for the warm welcoming!!
I might go pass this tavern thing if I have time- but what do you do exactly there? just meet up and stuff or you accually do some LARP-related stuff? haha
So the thing is that I had never done any LARP but I ve been wantintg to try out since I heard of it, and I thought that now that I have just moved to Berlin and since it's sucha a big city, I could find something interesting.
Problem is, I've only been studying German for two months and maybe you are right and it's a great opportunity to practice, but really I can't really hold a conversation yet hahaha so like it would be quite difficult. I'm originally Spanish and I can also speak French (:
It would be a bit unpolite for me to ask you to translate the whole forum hahaahha... but maybe you could explain a bit how the experience is like?

You're welcome!
Yeah that "tavern-thing" is actually a real larp-event. For one evening we all dress up and roleplay in the "Gutshaus zum reisenden Pilger" (-> Inn to the traveling pilgrim). So you get the full program, people dressing funny, giving themselves strange names and talking about things that don't exist.
You can find some pictures of the last taverns here:

My first LARP experience happened in that exact fictional inn so I can tell you firsthand that it's a good way to start. You don't have to leave town and camp in the woods with a couple of strangers for a few days. It's just one evening and you can leave anytime you want and have the public transport waiting for you right outside. (Although there is the possibility to stay overnight as well.)
If you're shy and uncomfortable to start role-playing right away and just want to stand in the corner and watch that's okay, but we can't allow people in regular clothes to do so because it would disturb the rest in their playing. (I should mention that I'm now part of the organizing-team).
You're welcome to drop by early (we're there from 11:00, the tavern starts around 16:00) and lend a hand in decorating the place, in return we can provide you with some clothes and you have the opportunity to ask questions and meet some of us in the real world (OT, out time) before we start to play. And if you help us a bit you don't even have to pay for the evening (which is 10 € otherwise).
The Location: It takes place in the "Pfadfinderburg Tegel" which you find at "Ziekowstr. 163, 13509 Berlin" (If you need more information, about bus lines and stuff, just ask).
I hope that answers some of your questions, feel free to ask more. But if you decide to join us next week we'll have some time to talk things through face to face.

Hi,
the dates for our LARP-tavern are still apointed for this year:
22th Feb 2014
30th Aug 2014
22th Nov 2014
Unfortunately, only third in this year. But organizing LARP-events isn't our major job. It is just hobby. ;-)

I am in the same situation as BoredomOrApathy. I played LARP from 2003 to 2010 in Québec (the French-speaking part of Canada) and then moved to France where I didn't LARP. Now I am in Berlin and also in the very early learnings of the German language and far from being able to have a discussion.
@ Tessa : Your proposition to come and «observer» at the tavern is quite a good idea. It would at least give us the "mood", even if we don't understand much
Eventually, I would really like to resume actively playing in a recurrent scenario around Berlin/Brandenburg. I miss that a LOT and I did bring some of my equipment from Canada.
